Languishing in the loft is my Nikon F301, along with three separate lenses (wide angle, standard and telephoto) and some filters. Also in the loft are many slide magazines full of photographs taken using Kodachrome 64 35mm film.
In my pocket for over a decade has been a smartphone capable of taking photographs that I am more that happy with (my ambitions to be an 'arty' photographer are in the loft along with the Nikon). This is, I think, partly because I learnt about photographic approaches (exposure; depth of field; shutter speed, etc; and most importantly, how to compose a picture) when you really needed to know in order to get half decent pictures.
On a recent holiday, whilst still being very happy with the photographs I was capturing, I started to hanker after a 'real' camera, where you could have complete control over what you were doing and where you were not subject to the admittedly very impressive and powerful computational photography offered by the smartphone.
But I still wanted the convenience of a very small and portable device ("the best camera is the one that's with you" and all that) so I've got a compact camera to go everywhere with me, alongside my smartphone. There's a bit of a steep learning curve, given that it's a digital camera, but that's part of the attraction.
